Addgene requires users to be logged in to view plasmid sequence data on our website. If you do not have an account, you can create one for free at addgene.org. If you are having difficulties accessing your account, please view our account recovery Help Center article for assistance.
Accessing sequence data
For users with an Addgene account, your access to sequence data is unchanged. When browsing our website as a logged in user, sequence data can be downloaded from the “Sequence” link on any plasmid page. Additional sequence files may also be found under the “Resource Information” section.
For a limited number of plasmid sequences, you will also be asked to acknowledge Addgene's Affinity Reagent Sequence Policy. This policy was implemented to protect the proprietary information contained in some material sequences.
Why does Addgene require a login to view sequence data?
Since 2004, Addgene's mission has been to reduce barriers to sharing scientific materials and keep resources flowing freely to researchers everywhere. Requiring a login to access sequence data is an extension of that commitment.
Scientists who deposit materials through Addgene do so with the expectation that their work will be used by the research community. In recent years, automated systems have been extracting sequence data from our website at scale — outside any research context and outside the intent of sharing. This made it difficult to ensure that data was reaching the audience depositors intended: scientists doing research.
By adding accountability to sequence access, we can protect the integrity of our collection and honor the trust depositors place in us.
Bulk and programmatic access to sequence data
Researchers who need bulk or programmatic access to sequence data can find multiple options through the Addgene Developers Portal. That pathway was built specifically to serve legitimate research needs at scale.
