At this time, Addgene cannot accept infectious DNA that requires biosafety conditions higher than Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1), nor can we accept plasmids that will produce anything known to be hazardous to humans or animals, including any that are listed as controlled items on the U.S. Bureau of Industry’s Commerce Control List (Category 1, subpart C).
If the unmodified individual plasmid DNA, either in purified form or when introduced into bacterial or mammalian cells, requires handling at Biosafety Level 2 or higher, Addgene can not accept the plasmid.
As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BSL-1 applies to laboratory settings in which personnel work with low-risk microbes that pose little to no threat of infection in healthy adults.
